Beauvautrait Alpacas are owned by Andy & Nicky Spillane & our daughter Leah. Our farms are in the Aquitaine and we started our herd with animals purchased in UK, USA & Ireland. We specialise in Huacaya Alpaca, preferring the looks and hardiness of these animals to the suri. Previously we have raised cattle, horses, poultry & prize winning hounds, exporting the last to UK, USA & Holland. Nicky is a successful competitor with her sheepdogs in obedience competitions at the highest level in France. We extensively researched alpacas & breeders in the late 90s, but our move to France delayed our purchase plans considerably, eventually buying our first animals in 2003. We chose alpacas for their beauty and ease of management. A calm, inquisitive and friendly animal of modest size with simple feed requirements and health care. Alpacas are ideally suited to our small farms, although the land is humid the small feet and light weight of the alpaca compact it rather than churn it up.  Though relatively rare in France at this time their popularity is rapidly spreading both as pets and as commercial livestock. At present the national herd numbers about 500 to 700, similar to UK in the late 90s. The UK herd now numbers over 12000 animals in just seven years of growth. We have purchased and produce top quality alpacas providing animals of sound conformation with excellent fleece characteristics for foundation herds and as pets in France. |
